Housing Justice

Housing Justice For Regional Victoria

Regional Victoria is facing a housing crisis. Rents are soaring, social housing is scarce, and many people are just one setback away from losing their homes.
They are often unaware of their rights or where to turn for help.

The Housing Justice Project brings together six regional, rural, and remote community legal centres to address housing stress in local communities.
Our aim: practical, place-based solutions that keep people safe, secure, and housed.

Housing stress looks different in every community.
We want to hear from people who have experienced housing challenges in regional Victoria—such as rising rents, discrimination, a shortage of social housing, or the risk of homelessness. Your insights help us advocate for better solutions.

What We Do

  • Map housing pressures in each region.
  • Connect local organisations to plan tailored responses.
  • Build pathways between legal help, housing support, and community services.
  • Gather evidence and lived experience to influence policy and funding.
  • Host a major Regional Housing Summit in 2026 to share insights with government and sector leaders.

Why It Matters

Housing challenges in regional Victoria are unique:

  • Few rental options and strong competition.
  • Discrimination in tight rental markets.
  • Limited social housing.
  • Climate disasters are putting towns at risk.
  • Barriers for older people, those leaving prison, survivors of family violence, and people with mental health issues.

These issues can’t be solved by a single organisation—they require collaboration and targeted approaches.

Your voice matters. By sharing your experience, you’ve helped us build a clearer picture of housing challenges across regional Victoria. This information will guide advocacy and service improvements.
